large brick and frame building was erected about 1835. This combination dwelling and general merchandise store
became the home of Julia Nicholas and Albert Mauzy. With
the majestic Massanutten behind them and the Blue Ridge Ranges in full view, they named
their new home "Montevideo"---monte, being Spanish for mountain, and video
meaning to see or view. This beautiful name
soon spread to include the surrounding community. About 1898 J. S. Huffman purchased the building and operated
a general store there for many years.

Sparta Spartapolis "In 1808 a man by the name of Hays kept a tavern on the
Great Wagon Road, at a point midway between Tenth Legion and Lacey Spring. At this point, now known as Mauzy, hard by the
highway, stands a large old house which in antebellum years was a favorite place for
muster and political speeches. A post office
was established here in 1829, named "Smith Creek," so writes Mrs. J. K. Mauzy,
the present owner of the old Mauzy home at Mauzy Interchange. About 1800, William Pickering built a home seven miles south
of New Market at a place called Hays Tavern. This
is the same home. The spacious frame
structure was built on land granted to Jacob Woodley and came into the Mauzy family by
marriage. Judge Summers records in an old diary of 1808,-"riding
horseback, seven miles south of New Market, having breakfast at Hays Tavern." The site of Hays Tavern was just across the Great Road from
the old Pickering log home. The post office
and a general store were located near the tavern. Col.
Emmanuel Sipe and Mr. J. B. Rhodes ran the store. Later,
because of road changes, the post office and general store were moved across the road,
beside the main house. The old road to
Broadway ran between the store and the Mauzy residence.
Signs of this once heavily traveled road are still clearly visible. Jacob Mauzy was a surveyor by trade. The Mauzy's were French Huguenots, who migrated to this area from Charleston, South Carolina. Jacob was widely known as a large land owner and a "well-to-do" stock farmer; his home was a
favorite stopping place for rest, refreshment and fresh horses. Jacob's only son Joseph, was also a surveyor
by trade. Joseph married Emma Strickler
Harrison. History relates that Joseph and Emma established a tradition
of hospitality handed down from the old tavern days.
One source states "they generously provided for all those in need and
contributed a goodly portion to charity." Jacob Mauzy, only son of Joseph and Emma,
married Irene Funkhouser, the present owner. "Jake,"
as Mr. Mauzy was fondly known, died in 1975, but he and his wife Irene provided the same
warm welcome to all who visited at "Mauzy." Mauzy was once called "Sparta." In 1831 Sparta was
established by law as a town and in 1839 the city's name was expanded to Spartapolis,
hoping that someday it would be a large city. In the years leading up to the Civil War,
Sparta was a place of muster. During the war Sheridan's men burned two barns here, but a
third large barn was saved when General Banks issued a "safeguard" to protect
the barn from being destroyed. The
"safeguard" was signed by Banks himself and is still in the Mauzy family. The story is told of Mr. Mauzy and his prized flock of
ducks. He had these ducks which he greatly
fancied. To prevent Sheridan's raiders from
stealing them he caught the ducks and penned them under the porch. That night the quacking ducks attracted the Union
soldiers and tradition tells us that the next day the Northern forces dined on "duck
soup"! The farm buildings at Mauzy have had much bad luck. In 1922, the large Mauzy barn was flattened by a
destructive tornado. The barn was rebuilt at
the same location, then in 1933, the barn again fell to fate. When new U. S. Route 11 was charted, the Mauzy
barn sat directly in the center of the highway. At
that time, the ill-fated barn was moved to its present site. In 1966 when interstate 81 opened, much of the old
Mauzy land was cut off from the main farm and the unfortunate barn sets today, a lonely
structure, between Route 11 and Interstate 81. What changes have occurred at this historic site-once a gay
wayside inn, a thriving general store, shops, a post office and a stage change. Today, best known for the many tragic accidents
that occur on Interstate 81 near Mauzy Interchange.
