(2) ELIZABETH ?3,4 Unknown5. She was born Unknown5, and died
Unknown5. Notes for MICHAEL MAUZE: [Mauzy.FTW] Notes from Linda Kelly, taken from Wm and Mary Quarterly: Michael Mauze and children, Michael Jr, Peter, John and
Isabel, were naturalized at the English Court at White Hall by Royal Letters December 16,
1687 and again on January 5, 1688. This is
the only entry in all the Huguenot records of England and Ireland referring to Michael
Mauze' and his children. The Mauzey-Mauzy family is of French origin and is an
outgrowth of the name Mauze' (Moze). It
played an important part in the religious troubles which swept across France during the
16th and 17th centuries and was represented, as it is today, by vigorous protestant
ministers. The family resided chiefly in an
area bounded on the north by Loudun, on the east by Poitiers, and on the south and west by
the coastal cities of Rochefort and LaRochelle. The focal point was the village of Mauze (Moze) Sur Le
Mignon in Aunis, about twenty miles east of LaRochelle.
Here the medieval Mauze castle is still standing in excellent condition. The name Mauze is believed to have been derived from the
Arabian word "Mauz", meaning plantain tree and was probably adopted during the
crusades to the Holy Land. In France, it was
written Mauze and Moze, and passed on to England, Holland and Ireland, Scotland and
America as Mauzey and Mauzy as well as Mauze and Moze.
The correct pronunciation in MO-ze, the acdnt being on the first syllable,
the last syllable spoken in a soft rapid manner. In various land grants, wills and other documents of
colonial America the name was frequently recorded as Mozee, Mozie, Mozey. The Mauzy variation developed by the substitution
of a y for an e and the Mauzy variant was adopted by the addition of a y to the Mauze, a
common method of anglicizing certain French names ending with e. Moze was simply the other way of spelling and
pronouncing Mauze. During the period between 1681 and 1724, at the time of the
Repeal of the Edict of Nantes, no less than ten Mauze (Moze) families left France and
appeared in the British Isles for naturalization as English citizens. Representatives of four of these families remained
in England, two went to Dublin, Ireland, one to Scotland, and 3 are believed to have come
to America. Note from Mauzey-Mauzy Family, by Armand Jean Mauzey, MD,
DSC Page 315 A study of the Mauze records strongly suggests that the
common Mauzey-Mauzy ancestor in America was John Mauze', born in England about 1675,
second son of Michael Mauze', born in France about 1650.
Three lines of descendants have developed.
Those descending from John Mauze', born 1696, and his first wife Hester
Connyers; those descending from John's sister, Margaret Mauze'Hedgman, born 1702; and
those descending from John Mauze' and second wife, Mary Crosby Mountyjoy Mauze' Waugh. Mauzy Descendants Tree from the homepage of: Resa Hull Rivers/resa@omnipages.com http://www.omnipages.com/resa/mauzy.htm More About MICHAEL MAUZE: Nationality: French Huegenot Naturalization: 1685, England6

Unknown. Notes for JOHN MAUZY: [Mauzy.FTW] Fled to England with his father, brothers, and sister about
the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in1685. He was naturalized as an English
citizen around 1687. He married the daughter of Dr. William Connyers, a London physician. Shortly thereafter he migrated to America, probably with
other French refugees (Huguenots) to Charleston, SC about 1700. He soon moved to Stafford
County, Virginia, where he was first referred to as John Mozey, but on the tombstone of
his daughter, Margaret Hedgeman, as "John Mauzy, Gentleman". By his first marriage to the Connyers woman he had three
children. After her death he married Mary Crosby Mountjoy, a widow, and they had two
children. (Notes from Wm and Mary Quarterly) Notes from "The Mauzey-Mauzy Family" by Armand Jean Mauzy, MD, DSC In the Land Grant records for the northern neck of Virginia
will be found the third Mauze', John, mentioned in connection with a land grant to Edward
Mountjoy in 1702. This John Mauze' is also
listed as a public officer for Stafford County, VA, in 1714, along with George Mason, John
Waugh, John West, Rice Hooe, John Washington, James Sumner, Dade Massie, George Anderson,
Henry Fitzhugh, Thomas Lunn, Rowling Travis, Thomas Gregg, and the minister, a Mr. Scott
of St. Paul and Overwharton Parishes. Then
John Mauze', Gentleman, is referred to on the tombstone of his daughter Margaret, who
married Peter Hedgeman, Gentleman, Stafford Cty, VA, 21 September 1721, and died 1754 at
the age of 52 years. Margaret was therefore
born in 1702 after her father arrived in VA. It
is quite possible that John came to Charles Town, Charleston SC, along with Jeanne
Elizabeth Mauze' and her husband Peter Videau. Notes from Christie Hall (FBCratty@aol.com): "Henry" Mauzy was a Huguenot refugee who fled to
France in a hogshead marked "merchandise" (in the same vessel that carried James
Fontaine) after Louis XIV repealed the Edict of Nantes.
He spent some time in England, and married a Dr. Connyer's daughter there. It is believed that he sailed into the port of
Charleston, SC in 1685, then went to VA and settled in Stafford County. Notes for MARY CROSBY: [Mauzy.FTW] Notes from Linda Kelly: The last will of Mary Crosby Mountjoy Mauzy Waugh was dated
March 27, 1749 and proved December 14, 1756. As
it remains of record at Stafford Cty Court House. By
a lone cedar tree in the cornfield of Mrs. Robinson near Brooke Station in Stafford Cty,
VA is the crumbling tombstone of Mary Crosby Waugh. This
was once a large burying ground, but all of the stones have disappeared except that of
Mary, which was broken and about to disintegrate. This
tract of land is known as "Locust Hill". Her
tombstone reads: Here lies the body of Mrs. Mary Waugh who departed from this
life in the month of July in the Year of our Lord 175? The remainder of her tombstone could not be located. She has been referred to as Much Marrying Mary, because of
her 3 marriages to" Edward Mountjoy, John Mauzy and Rev. Joseph Waugh. She had children by all 3 marriages. In the will of Mary Crosby Mountjoy Mauzy Waugh, made in
1749, she left property to each of her children as follows: "To my son William Mountjoy, 840 acres of land, to son
Peter Mauzy, 300 acres of land in Prince William Cty where Francis Watt now lives, to
daughter Elizabeth Mauzy Conway, 150 acres of land and to daughter Mary Doniphan personal
estate." Notes on Peter Mauzy, son of John and Mary Crosby Mauzy: On November 11, 1730, William Allen was appointed guardian
for Peter, indicating Peter was not of age. This
was necessary because young Peter's grandfather, George Crosby (Mary's father),had died in
1730, leaving him land on Town Run. On July 10, 1734, Peter in turn became guardian for
Elizabeth Summers, eventually his wife, and his bond was ordered recorded with William
Mountjoy and John Mauzy as security. From the Overwharton Parish Records, Stafford Cty, VA, Peter
Mauzy married Elizabeth Summers on February 9, 1735. Peter's will was made in 1750. Witnesses were William Mountjoy, Alexander
Doniphan and John Mauzy, Sr. It should be
recalled that William Mountjoy was Peter's half brother, by Mary Crosby's first marriage
to Captain Edward Mountjoy and that Alexander Doniphan had married Peter's half sister,
Mary Waugh, born to Mary Crosby and Joseph Waugh.

of Rockingham. Notes from CatBaloo, Mary: William and Mary Quarterly Rodham Kemper is buried at Cross Keys cememtery, Rockingham
Cty, VA, where he spent his married life as a merchant.
He came to the Valley of Virginia in 1811 or 1812 and was a clerk for 5 or 6
years in the store of Col. Joseph Mauzy at McGaheysville.
During a portion of this time Col. Joseph Mauzy was in command of a company
in the War of 1812. About 1818 he went into
the mercantile business with Michael Mauzy at Mt. Sidney, Augusta Cty, VA. Col. Joseph Mauzy was editor of Rockingham
Register. Notes from Christie Hall (FBCratty@aol.com) Joseph Mauzy remembered being present in 1799 when the crier
brought news of George Washington's death. Joseph
commanded a company at Norfolk, VA in the War of 1812, and was a member of the Virginia
legislature during the first term of James Monroe. Joseph Mauzy, born August 14, 1779; died December 20, 1863
in near McGaheysville, Rockingham, VA; married Christina Kisling September 12, 1805 in
Rockingham County, VA. Notes from "The Heartland, Rockingham County,
VA"...page 362 During the Civil War, McGaheysville was a thriving town of
approximately 31 citizens, according to first records.
There was a blacksmith shop, tannery, grist mill, woolen mill, shoe shop,
hat shop, tailor shop, bar room, and several general stores. The first store was built in 1805 by Joseph Mauzy
and operated by Mauzy and Armentrout. Older
community residents say you could buy anything there from a darning needle to a threshing
machine. Farmers from all directions took
their eggs and chickens to the store to trade for coal oil, coffee and other household
needs. Young boys in the area made their
spending money selling rabbits to the store for 25 cents each. Families from the mountains brought in tubs of
blueberries to sell also. All these itmes
were stored in a large room back of the store building in which the tanks of coal oil were
kept. Later, all shipped to Balitmore or
Philadelphia for sale. 1810 Rockingham County Census Mauzy, Joseph page
